English Learners (EL)
Big Horn County School District #2 identifies and provides services for students for English Language Learners.
Identification Process: Identification is a two-step process
- Home Language Survey: When any student enrolls in Big Horn #2, parents are asked to complete a Home Language Survey as part of the registration process.
- English Language Proficiency Screener: If the Home Language Survey indicates that a student's language has been influenced by something other than English, the district will administer a screening assessment to determine eligibility for EL services. Parents will be notified by a letter if a student is to be placed in EL services.
EL Services:
- Language Instruction Education Plan (LIEP): All students identified for EL services will have an LIEP developed to determine goals, services, and assessment accommodations.
- Services: Services will include in-class and/or out-of-class learning interventions as determined by the LIEP team.
- We apply the 5 Key Standards of English Language Development:
- Language for Social and Instructional Purposes: English language learners
communicate for social and instructional purposes within the school setting. - Language for Language Arts: English language learners communicate information,
ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of language arts.. - Language for Mathematics: English language learners communicate information,
ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of mathematics. - Language for Science: English language learners communicate information,
ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of science. - Language for Social Studies: English language learners communicate information,
ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of social studies.
