Subgroup Performance on the Statewide Assessments

The main purpose of ESSA is to make sure public schools provide a quality education for all students. This expectation sets the requirement to monitor performance of designated subgroups using the statewide assessments. For accountability decisions, the State of Wyoming uses a process to determine if a subgroup receives a score on the state assessments. This is based on the requirement that a school must have a minimum number of 10 students to produce a score on an assessment indicator.

  • One-Year Lookback: For schools with fewer than 10 students in a subgroup, the performance of students in that subgroup from the previous year is combined with the current year.
  • Two-Year Lookback: If there are still fewer than 10 students, the performance of students from two previous years is combined with the current year.
  • Scored: If the school has 10 or more students in the subgroup at this point, the school receives a score for the related indicator(s).
  • No Score: If the school still has fewer than 10 students in the subgroup, the school does not receive a score for the related indicator(s).

Federal and state requirements define the subgroups that are monitored for performance. The following chart shows the designated subgroups and the number of students for each subgroup who participated in the 2017-18 state assessments. The number in each subgroup for the various indicators will vary due to calculation procedures.
